What does The Herring Net show?

Two fishermen in a small boat, hauling in a net heavy with herring as the boat rises on the swell, with the fishing fleet faint in the mist behind them. Homer painted ordinary working people as heroes, holding their own against the sea.

Where and when was it painted?

At Prouts Neck, Maine, in 1885. Two years in the fishing village of Cullercoats in England (1881–82) had changed his work, and in the autumn of 1884 he went out with the herring fleet to sketch the catch. He painted The Herring Net the next year, along with The Fog Warning and Lost on the Grand Banks.

In the Art Institute of Chicago. It is oil on canvas, 76.5 × 122.9 cm.
