What is a giclée print?

Giclée (pronounced zhee-KLAY) is the name for fine art prints made on an inkjet printer. Printmaker Jack Duganne coined it around 1990, from the French gicleur, a nozzle, for the fine art prints his studio was making on a modified inkjet printer; today it is used for fine art inkjet printing on archival paper or canvas. Because each print is made one at a time, prints can be made to order instead of in a large print run.

The paper: Hahnemühle German Etching

Hahnemühle, the German paper maker, describes German Etching as a white, mould-made, 100% α-cellulose paper with a distinct textured surface and a matt fine art coating. It is acid-free and buffered with calcium carbonate, and it is made for fine art and photographic reproduction to archival standards. At 310 gsm it is a heavy paper, coated for printing while keeping, in Hahnemühle’s words, “the special touch and feel of genuine art paper”.

Sizes and framing

Most prints are A4 (8.3 x 11.7 in); the prints of Beethoven and Mrs Henry White are A5 (5.8 x 8.3 in). Each piece comes as an unframed print or framed: an A5 print in a matted A4 frame of about 9 x 12.5 in, or a print in a matted A3 frame of about 13 x 17 in. The exact frame size is on each print’s page, and “See it on your wall” shows the framed print at its real size in a photo of your room. For a larger print, ask for a quote.

Choosing a print for your wall

Art over furniture looks best when it spans about two-thirds of the furniture’s width, with its centre at eye level, about 145–150 cm (57–60 in) from the floor. A single A4 or A3-framed print suits a desk, a bedside table, a console or a narrow wall; above a sofa or bed, hang two or three as a group, about 5–8 cm apart, and keep one frame colour or palette so they read as one piece.

Art print or original?

An original is a single painting that exists only once; a print reproduces the image so it can hang in many homes, at a fraction of the price. Several pieces here are sold both ways: the hand-painted oil original under Paintings and archival prints of it here.

Questions

What is a giclée print?
A fine art print made on an inkjet printer, on archival fine art paper or canvas. These are printed on Hahnemühle German Etching paper.
How is a fine art print different from a poster?
A poster is a mass-produced decorative print. A fine art print is made from an artist’s original work on archival paper meant to last; these are giclées on acid-free Hahnemühle paper, each made to order and sent with a certificate of authenticity.
Why do giclée prints cost more than posters?
Each one is printed individually on fine art paper instead of thousands at once on an offset press, so each print costs more to make. In return it can be made to order, one at a time, on archival paper.
What sizes are the prints?
Most prints are A4 (8.3 x 11.7 in); the prints of Beethoven and Mrs Henry White are A5 (5.8 x 8.3 in). Framed prints come in a matted A4 frame (about 9 x 12.5 in) or a matted A3 frame (about 13 x 17 in).
Can I get a bigger print?
Yes, ask for a quote. In “See it on your wall” on a print’s page, enlarge the preview to the size you want and send the email it fills in, or write to riya.kumari1999@gmail.com.
How should I care for a print?
Keep the print away from direct sunlight and moisture. Handle an unframed print by its edges with clean, dry hands, and frame it behind UV-protective glass so the colours last.
How long does delivery take?
Prints are made to order and ship in 10–14 days. Shipping is a flat ₹200 within India and a flat USD 20 anywhere else.
Can I return a print?
Each print is made to order, so returns are not accepted. Please check the size and framing on the print’s page before you order.
